Story Times!

Story Time will take a break during the summer.

Story Times

Mondays with Miss Linda at 11:15 a.m.  
May 7, 14, 21

Tuesdays with Miss Mary at 11:15 a.m.
May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
 

For preschool-aged children (and younger siblings), this is a structured reading time where several books on the same theme are shared, then a craft is completed.  An adult must stay with whatever children they bring.  All Story Times are held in the Story Corner, located in the southwest corner of the library unless otherwise indicated at the library entrance.

Times and dates are posted at the library each month, as well as being available in the local newspaper, the Commercial Review, and broadcast on the local radio station, WPGW - Portland (100.9 FM, 1400 AM).

Summer Reading Program

 

 Summer Reading Program for 2012

Register June 4th - June 16th

Read June 4th - July 14th

 

Procedures & Rules

  • Fill out a registration form at the library between June 4th and June 16th, 2012, contracting for a number of books to be read OR for an amount of time to be spent reading. 
     

  • Parents are asked to sign to acknowledge that they have read the rules and are aware that their child has signed up for the reading program.  (Cheer them on!  Include reading in your summer planning!)
     

  • You'll receive a book log to keep at home.  Mark down titles as you read them.  If you choose to time your reading instead, please color the time markers as indicated and list your books.  (If the log is lost, blank replacements will be available.  But don't lose your information!)
     

  • Check out lots of books.  Read, read, read!!!
     

  • When you've reached your goal, turn your reading log in at the Circulation Desk.  It MUST be turned in by Saturday, July 14th at 5:00 p.m.!
     

Rules

  1. All books read must be available at Jay County Public Library.
     

  2. Books must be at your normal reading level (young children may be read to). 
     

  3. Contract for a number of books, or for an amount of time spent reading.

    At picture book level, readers must contract for at least 12 picture books. 
    At picture book transitioning to chapter book level, at least 10 picture books & 2 chapter books.
    At chapter book level read at least 6 chapter books. 
    Time goals should be for a minimum total of 6 hours during the program. 

    You may always contract for more or exceed your contract!
     

  4. Reading logs will be kept in the reader's possession.  Each child (or parent) is responsible for logging the books that are read or the time spent reading.
     

  5. All books must be recorded in the log and it must be turned in to the library by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14th with NO EXCEPTIONS

    Everyone who reads the number of books or spending the time reading that they set as a goal according to the minimums listed above will be invited to a pool at the Portland Pool on Saturday, July 21st.    Refreshments will be served and prizes will be awarded.

Teens' Summer Reading Program 2012

 

 

 

Teen Summer Reading Program

 

 

 

Those who are entering 6th through 12th grade
can enroll in the Teen SRP this summer.

Register : June 4th - 16th

Read:  June 4th - July 14th

School Bus Safety Program

An annual school bus ride and safety information is offered at the end of summer to Jay County's incoming kindergarten and 1st grade students. Children ride a real school bus from JCPL to Bloomfield Elementary. The bus driver provides a review of school bus safety rules. At the school building, the kindergarten teacher will welcome the children to her classroom where they are treated to some kindergarten fun, a story or two, and a chance to play on the playground equipment.  Come share and learn with your child.  The bus leaves the library at 10:00 a.m. and returns at noon.  

2012 "Ready to Ride"  
August 6th at 10:00 am

Call (260-726-7890) or stop by the library (315 N. Ship St., Portland) to register your kindergartener or first grader. Riders must be accompanied by an adult. Older and younger siblings may not ride the school bus. The program is limited to 50 bus riders.

After School Specials - where do you go after class?

For the school-aged crowd, grades K-5, this program on the first Friday of each month during the school year is limited to the first 20 kids to sign up in advance.  A story is shared, snacks are provided, and a craft is completed.  Call (260) 726-7890 to sign up now!
