May 2013 KIDSHEET

FLOWER MONTH

Celebrate the magic of spring with the beautiful and fragrant gift of flowers. They suddenly seem to be popping up everywhere—in flowerbeds, on trees, all over the yard! You can plant some of your own. Just visit a lawn and garden shop and choose some lovely blooms to brighten your room or yard. All it takes is some soil, a pot, and a little tender loving care.

Check out these books for some how to do it advice, found in the junior non-fiction section J635:

Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots : gardening together with children by Sharon Lovejoy

KINDERGARTEN PREP SCHOOL

KiPS! THIS SUMMER

Kindergarten Prep School is a program designed to provide academic and social skills over the summer to children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall. Any child who is eligible for kindergarten in the Jay Schools for the 2013-2014 school year may register for the program.

The program is free of charge and will last for 10 weeks over the summer. It is held EVERY Tuesday from June 4th through August th from 9 a.m. to noon.

Transportation may be provided by the Jay Schools or parents can drop children off at the library.

Children spend time in small groups learning such skills as how to stand in line, how to raise their hands to ask questions, how to participate in group activities, how to walk from one area to another. They also practice academics in math, reading, art, gym, small motor skills, music, and writing.

To register a child for KiPS, fill out the form received at Kindergarten Round-up or pick one up at the library and return it ASAP. Deadline to register is April 30.

Tuesdays will be very active times in the children’s area at the library this summer!

Summer Reading Program 2013 coming in June:

Dig Into READING

The theme for the children’s program this summer is about things in the ground and things growing there and dirt and mud and stuff! Look for the program to begin June 3rd and continue through July 13th. There will be lots of different programs offered during the summer. Registration forms will be available starting June 3rd. Then you can really dig in!

BENEATH THE SURFACE

The teen program will be available again this summer for students in 6th - 12th grades. The theme is all kinds of things beneath the surface! If you meet our requirements, you may participate in the final party—this year one just for you!
