Chocolate chips were invented in 1937 when Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn in the town of Whitman, Massachusetts added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate bar to a cookie recipe.

Celebrate Chocolate Chip Day by making some cookies of your own. Use the recipe on the package of chocolate chips then settle in with a handful of cookies and a glass of milk and check out these books about cookies just for fun:

Frankenstein makes a sandwich by Adam Rex (J811.6)

Sneaky art by Marthe Jocelyn (J745.5)

Cookies by William Jaspersohn (J664)

Green crafts : become an earth-friendly craft star by Megan Friday (J745.593)

 And don’t forget the classics!

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff (E)

The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins (E)

Kindergarten Prep School is a partnership between Jay County Public Library and Jay Schools. It is a program designed to provide academic and social skills over the summer to children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall.

Any child who is eligible for kindergarten in the Jay Schools for the 2015-2016 school year may register for the program.

The program is free of charge and will last for 10 weeks over the summer. It is held EVERY Tuesday from June 2nd through August 4th from 9 a.m. to noon.

Transportation may be provided by the Jay Schools or parents can drop children off at the library.

Children spend time in small groups learning such skills as how to stand in line, how to raise their hands to ask questions, how to participate in group activities, how to walk from one area to another. They also practice academics in math, reading, art, gym, small motor skills, music, and writing.

To register a child for KiPS, fill out the form received at Kindergarten Round-up or pick one up at the library and return it ASAP. Deadline to register is May 15th.

Tuesdays will be very active times in the children’s area at the library this summer!
