HOT DIGGITY DOG!

It seems only right that National Hot Dog Day (16th) would happen during National Picnic Month! Light up the grill or campfire, spear some dogs, and let’s have a cookout!

What is a hot dog?

It can be defined as the following: A cooked sausage that consists of a combination of beef and pork or all beef, which is cured, smoked, and cooked. Seasonings may include coriander, garlic, ground mustard, nutmeg, salt, sugar, and white pepper. They are fully cooked but are usually served hot. Sizes range from big dinner frankfurters to tiny cocktail size. Also called frankfurters, frank, weenie, wienie, wiener, dog, and red hot.

For all who successfully reached their Summer Reading goal! Kids and teens are invited to attend, as are parents or other caregivers (and EVERYONE can swim!)

• Three lifeguards will be on duty; children under 7 years of age must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age.
   
• Bring your toys and tubes and water wings! All types of water toys are allowed at this private party!
   
• Tentatively scheduled for July 21, 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Portland Pool.  Swim, pick up your awards, and enjoy some refreshments!

While our Summer Reading Program winds down, there are still a few more things you can do!

Don't Miss the Bus!

Our annual “get acquainted with riding the school bus” program is tentatively set for Monday, August 6th @ 10:00 a.m.

Kids who are entering kindergarten, along with a parent, can sign up to ride a school bus from the library to Bloomfield Elementary School. Before takeoff, the driver goes over the rules, gives kids safety suggestions, and explains what type of behavior is expected. Once at the school, kindergarten teacher Mrs. Gregg opens up her classroom. Kids (and rookie parents!) can get a good idea what goes on in school before it actually starts!

Sign-up is necessary and is limited to the first 50 riders. Call the library to sign up for this fun-filled program!

Crafts & Activities

A solar-cooked hot dog -- do try this at home!

YOU WILL NEED:

• One cylindrical oatmeal container with lid

• Sharp scissors

• Aluminum foil

• Hole puncher

• Long wooden skewer (for shish-ka-bobs)

• Plastic wrap, optional
   

YOU WILL DO:

1. Remove the lid from the container and cut in half.

2. Use the sharp scissors and cut the container in half lengthwise.

3. Punch a hole in the lid and in the bottom of the container about 1/2 way from the cut end.

4. Replace the half lid on the container.

5. Cover the whole container with aluminum foil. Make sure you leave the holes open.

6. Place a hotdog on the wooden dowel and place the ends of the dowel through the holes.

7. Place out in the yard in sunlight and let the hotdog roast until cooked all the way through. You may wish to cover with foil or plastic wrap.
